Why Are My AC Coils Frozen?

Posted on: July 24th, 2015

If your AC starts blowing hot air it may be due to the fact that it is freezing up. The coil is an important part of cooling your house down. The coils work by taking the warm air from your home and releasing them outside. If the coils in your AC unit become too cold, they can freeze up. When your coils are frozen the ice can cause blockages, this results in your AC unit constantly running without cooling the home, whilst using a lot more electricity than usual.

Why Do the Coils Continually Freeze Up?

One reason why your coils constantly freeze up could be due to blocked airflow. This can happen when your air filter is clogged. It is a good idea to keep your air filter clean and change them out at least every two months during the warmer months. If you have pets, you may want to switch your filters out at monthly intervals. You will also want to  make sure that the registers in your home are open and clear. If you can’t find any clogged filters or returns, then your coil may be freezing up for other reasons.

Low refrigerant is another cause of frozen coils. When your refrigerant is low, your coils can get too cold and this can quickly lead to coils freezing up when your AC unit is constantly running during the summer.

If there are no clogs in your system and your systems refrigerant levels are fine, you may need to  look at your thermostat. A faulty thermostat that is causing your system to work harder can also cause your coils to freeze up.

If you suspect that your AC coils are frozen you will need to turn the AC system off and let the coils defrost. Continuing to run your unit will not only use a lot more electricity but it could cause damage to the AC compressor. If your system continually freezes up and you have had the above causes checked out, it may be best to have a professional look at your system.
